Blogmas 2023: Non Holiday Audiobook Review: The Coworker {Freida McFadden}

Blogmas 2023: Non Holiday Audiobook Review: The Coworker {Freida McFadden}

I know that holiday content isn’t everyone’s thing so I always like to toss in some non holiday content during Blogmas! However, if holiday content IS your thing and you missed yesterday’s post..forget about this post and go focus on that one instead!!!

Cutest shirt that I saw while out shopping last week! I should have bought it!

Ahhh Freida McFadden. Always my go to when I need a good psychological thriller audiobook as background noise while I’m driving, straightening my hair, folding laundry, cooking, etc. In fact, this is my 7th Freida McFadden audiobook I’ve listened to this year!

Here are my reviews of the other 6 books of hers that I have read in 2023 (listened to…all audiobooks):

The Surrogate Mother

The Inmate

Do Not Disturb

Want to Know a Secret?

The Locked Door (AKA The Most ANNOYING Audiobook Voice)

The Wife Upstairs

And now for the most recent Freida McFadden audiobook that I’ve listened to:

Goodreads Synopsis of The Coworker {Freida McFadden}:

Two women. An office filled with secrets. One terrible crime that can’t be taken back.

Dawn Schiff is strange. At least, everyone thinks so at Vixed, the nutritional supplement company where Dawn works as an accountant. She never says the right thing. She has no friends. And she is always at her desk at precisely 8:45 a.m.

So when Dawn doesn’t show up to the office one morning, her coworker Natalie Farrell—beautiful, popular, top sales rep five years running—is surprised. Then she receives an unsettling, anonymous phone call that changes everything…

It turns out Dawn wasn’t just an awkward outsider—she was being targeted by someone close. And now Natalie is irrevocably tied to Dawn as she finds herself caught in a twisted game of cat and mouse that leaves her wondering: who’s the real victim?

But one thing is incredibly clear: somebody hated Dawn Schiff. Enough to kill.

My Review of The Coworker {Freida McFadden}

I liked it! I didn’t love it but I definitely liked it. The 2nd half was SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 1st half. I found the first half boring and a bit confusing…but things came together in the 2nd half and my feelings turned around!

A few twists I didn’t see coming which was nice. Overall, a good book as background noise as you are doing other things. Not my favorite psychological thriller but it’s ok!

Will I forget these characters and storylines in about 3 days? Yes, yes I will. Was it good enough to listen to at the time? Yes!

Book Coffee Happy Epilogue:

This book was good! Not great…but good!

Audiobook Review: The Wrong Family {Ellery Kane}

From Book Coffee Happy’s Insta:

We saw Hamilton for the 2nd time! Although I liked the cast from the first time we saw it much more than this one, it was still amazing obvi!

Hiiiii! Happy Fall! I have an audiobook review for you today from a book I’ve been listening to while recently taking some gorgeous fall walks around my neighborhood. I only wish I loved the book as much as I loved the walks 🙂

***Note: This book is not to be confused with The Wrong Family by Tarryn Fisher. My review of THAT mess of a book can be found HERE.***

Goodreads Synopsis of The Wrong Family {Ellery Kane}:

He tells you he’s your father. He welcomes you into his family. And now you’re trapped…

I’ve never met my father. It was always just me and Mom, so when she died, I was completely alone. But today, years since I first mailed my DNA to Family Ties, I finally have a match. They’ve found my biological father.

When I meet Robert , he’s warm, dependable, sturdy. I’m desperate for him to like me. I want to be part of his perfect, high-flying family more than anything.

Except, I’m not so sure they are perfect. Every day, strange things go wrong in the Thompsons’ grand Lake Tahoe house. A family photo is found burning. Robert’s car is tampered with. My mother’s necklace goes missing.

Though that’s nothing compared to the horror of finding the huge family portrait violently slashed in its ornate gold frame… But someone is trying to blame me for everything—all eyes are on me. I can’t run now.

And then I receive an email from Family Ties that makes my blood run cold.

Robert Thompson is not my father.

Now I’m trapped in a house full of strangers, with no idea who I can trust. And I’m terrified my life is in grave danger…

My Review of The Wrong Family {Ellery Kane}:

WHY. DO. AUTHORS. SPOIL. THEIR. BOOKS. BY. GIVING. AWAY. TOO. MUCH. IN. THE. SYNOPSIS?!?

I can’t even. The biggest twist in this whole book is literally given right in the synopsis. How dumb is that?! I freaking hate spoilers.

This book was just eh from the very beginning. A few things I didn’t see coming but none as shocking as the most UNshocking twist that wasn’t even a twist because I read it before I even listened to the book.

Everything about this book just kind of fell flat for me. Annoying characters, stupid storylines. The kind of book that you forget about the minute it’s over without ever giving it another thought.

Book Coffee Happy Epilogue:

Nope. Skip it.

Audiobook Review: The Wife Upstairs {Freida McFadden}

Love this.

This is the 6th Freida McFadden book that I have listened to! Here are my reviews of the other 5 books of hers that I have read (listened to…all audiobooks):

The Surrogate Mother

The Inmate

Do Not Disturb

Want to Know a Secret?

The Locked Door (AKA The Most ANNOYING Audiobook Voice)

Goodreads Synopsis of The Wife Upstairs {Freida McFadden}

Victoria Barnett has it all.

A great career. A handsome and loving husband. A beautiful home in the suburbs and a plan to fill it with children. Life is perfect—or so it seems.

Then she’s in a terrible accident… and everything falls apart.

Now Victoria is unable to walk. She can’t feed or dress herself. She can’t even speak. She is confined to the top floor of her house with twenty-four-hour care.

Sylvia Robinson is hired by Victoria’s husband to help care for her. But it turns out Victoria isn’t as impaired as Sylvia was led to believe. There’s a story Victoria desperately wants to tell… if only she could get out the words.

Then Sylvia discovers Victoria’s diary hidden away in a drawer.

And what’s inside is shocking.

My Review of The Wife Upstairs {Freida McFadden}

Eh.

So I liked it and looked forward to listening to it each day. The story definitely held my interest and was great to listen to as an audiobook.

It’s just…it’s all been done before. The whole story. I can’t really say much without giving away some pretty big spoilers but every twist…been there, done that.

I’ve listened to and gave read so many psychological thrillers that by this point…nothing about this one was shocking. A few tiny twists but I truly saw all of the big ones from the very beginning.

And don’t even get me started on how this book is basically a direct copy of another VERY popular psychological thriller…I won’t say which one but I really don’t need to. If you read this book, you’ll just KNOW.

And the ending of this book was…confusing and yet predictable. Eh.

Book Coffee Happy Epilogue:

Kept me entertained but entirely too predictable.

Most Annoying Audiobook Voice.

Most Annoying Audiobook Voice.

This gigantic zucchini has absolutely nothing to do with this blog post but it’s insane and deserves a permanent spot on the Internet.

This is my 5th Freida Mcfadden audiobook that I’ve listened to. I went into it assuming it would be like the others…not the BEST psychological thrillers out there…but definitely GOOD. Like, easy to listen to while doing other things, easy to follow the stories, etc. Here are my thoughts on the 4 other Freida Mcfadden audiobooks I’ve listened to:

The Surrogate Mother

The Inmate

Do Not Disturb

Want to Know a Secret?

And now…my 5th Freida Mcfadden book. The one with the most annoying narrator of all time:

Goodreads Synopsis of The Locked Door {Freida Mcfadden}:

Some doors are locked for a reason…

While eleven-year-old Nora Davis was up in her bedroom doing homework, she had no idea her father was killing women in the basement.

Until the day the police arrived at their front door.

Decades later, Nora’s father is spending his life behind bars, and Nora is a successful surgeon with a quiet, solitary existence. Nobody knows her father was a notorious serial killer. And she intends to keep it that way.

Then Nora discovers one of her young female patients has been murdered. In the same unique and horrific manner that her father used to kill his victims.

Somebody knows who Nora is. Somebody wants her to take the fall for this unthinkable crime. But she’s not a killer like her father. The police can’t pin anything on her.

As long as they don’t look in her basement.

Most Annoying Audiobook Voice

I never even got to determine if I liked the story or if it was well written because…THAT. VOICE. It was AWFUL. I can’t even describe it…like an old fashioned detective type voice? Does that even make sense? Like a cartoon? I truly can’t describe that voice….like every word she said had such an intense tone. Terrible.

I talked a bit about this on Instagram saying that there are definitely certain voices (accents, etc.) that I prefer while listening to audiobooks but I’ve NEVER had to stop listening purely due to the voice of the narrator. Until this book. Made it exactly 15% before I was DONE. I could not handle that voice for even 1 second longer.
