Book Review: The Wife Between Us {Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen}

I feel like the theme on my blog over the past 2 weeks has been “unpopular opinions”.  It started with Let’s Chat: When Your Opinion Is The Unpopular One and then continued with Book Review: Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine {Gail Honeyman}

Ladies and Gentleman, may I present to you my unintentional 3rd installment over the past 2 weeks revolving around this same theme (insert eye roll emoji here):

wife

Synopsis from Goodreads:

When you read this book, you will make many assumptions.
You will assume you are reading about a jealous ex-wife.
You will assume she is obsessed with her replacement – a beautiful, younger woman who is about to marry the man they both love.
You will assume you know the anatomy of this tangled love triangle.
Assume nothing.

Twisted and deliciously chilling, Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen’s The Wife Between Us exposes the secret complexities of an enviable marriage – and the dangerous truths we ignore in the name of love.

Read between the lies.

2 Stars

This book is POPULAR.  Everyone is reading it.  It’s even currently nominated for the Goodreads Best Book of 2018 Award!

I just don’t get it.

I wanted to love it, I really did.  I waited for MONTHS for it to finally be released and once it was, I couldn’t get my hands on a copy fast enough.  It sounded AMAZING, I was so intrigued from just reading the synopsis.

It.  Was.  So.  Boring.

The major twist was interesting, I didn’t see it coming AT ALL which I love in a book.  Hence my 2 stars.  2 stars for the twist, 0 stars for the rest.  I’m bored even writing this review.

Completely forgettable characters, completely forgettable story lines.  Completely forgettable book.

The biggest, most burning question that I have about this book:  It took TWO people to write this boring story?!?

Bottom Line:

This might just be my most disappointing book of 2018.  I was SO excited to read it…and then I was SO excited for it to finally be over once I finished.

1 Awesome Book And It’s Not Nearly As Awesome Sequel

firefly2

Synopsis from Goodreads:

In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the “coolest girl in the world” moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all—beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer’s end they’ve become TullyandKate. Inseparable.

So begins Kristin Hannah’s magnificent new novel. Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives.

From the beginning, Tully is desperate to prove her worth to the world. Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she longs to be loved unconditionally. In the glittering, big-hair era of the eighties, she looks to men to fill the void in her soul. But in the buttoned-down nineties, it is television news that captivates her. She will follow her own blind ambition to New York and around the globe, finding fame and success . . . and loneliness.

Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special. Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life. In her own quiet way, Kate is as driven as Tully. What she doesn’t know is how being a wife and mother will change her . . . how she’ll lose sight of who she once was, and what she once wanted. And how much she’ll envy her famous best friend. . . .

For thirty years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship—jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment. They think they’ve survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart . . . and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test.

Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone’s Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac. More than a coming-of-age novel, it’s the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices. It’s about promises and secrets and betrayals. And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you—and knows what has the power to hurt you . . . and heal you. Firefly Lane is a story you’ll never forget . . . one you’ll want to pass on to your best friend.

Oh this is one beautifully written book.  Talk about being taken on a JOURNEY.  When I closed the cover once I finished, I was emotionally exhausted in the very best way possible.  You know those brilliantly written books where once you finish, you look around and realize that somehow you need to say good-bye to the characters but aren’t quite sure how to move on?  This book was such a perfect example of that for me.  Thank God there was a sequel!

I absolutely loved everything about this book.  It spans over the course of 30 years—30 years!—-and throughout so many settings.  Memorable characters, such interesting story lines, such meaningful lessons.

I can’t recommend this one highly enough.  I laughed, I sobbed, and I realized for the zillionith time just how lucky I am to have the best friends that I do.  If you haven’t read this one yet…it’s time 🙂

My Thoughts

4 Stars

I don’t want to even include the synopsis of this sequel as it contains major spoilers from Firefly Lane.  I enjoyed this book because I was so invested in the characters and their stories before I even began reading…but…this book just doesn’t compare to Firefly Lane.  If you read Firefly Lane, you definitely should read this one, but I was a bit disappointed because I just loved the first one so, so much.

Bottom Line

Firefly Lane = amazing. Fly Away = very good.

herpretty.jpg

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Frances Metcalfe is struggling to stay afloat.

A stay-at-home mom whose troubled son is her full-time job, she thought that the day he got accepted into the elite Forrester Academy would be the day she started living her life. Overweight, insecure, and lonely, she is desperate to fit into Forrester’s world. But after a disturbing incident at the school leads the other children and their families to ostracize the Metcalfes, she feels more alone than ever before.

Until she meets Kate Randolph.

Kate is everything Frances is not: beautiful, wealthy, powerful, and confident. And for some reason, she’s not interested in being friends with any of the other Forrester moms—only Frances. As the two bond over their disdain of the Forrester snobs and the fierce love they have for their sons, a startling secret threatens to tear them apart…because one of these women is not who she seems. Her real name is Amber Kunick. And she’s a murderer.

In her masterful follow-up to The Party, Robyn Harding spins a web of lies, deceit, and betrayal, asking the question: Can people ever change? And even if they can, is it possible to forgive the past?

I love a good psychological thriller.  I love a good plot twist. I love when characters end up taking on a whole different persona than the reader is led to believe. Mostly, I love when an author is able to completely take me on such a wild ride of plot twists that I never even saw them coming.

Her Pretty Face delivers none of that.

Without even trying, I was able to correctly predict every single plot twist and character identification from very early on in the novel. I HATE when that happens and I spent the rest of the story convinced that I couldn’t be right only to eventually learn that I had been spot on the entire time.

It is told through 3 characters….just enough. I do not enjoy when authors tell a story though too many points of view.  It gets confusing.  3 is perfect! I felt some of the story lines were very unbelievable (the relationship between Daisy and David, the infatuation that Frances felt towards Kate, etc.)

The overall story itself is very dark, yet very intriguing. It kept me interested the entire time, although part of that might have been driven by my desire to prove myself wrong with all of my predictions.

Bottom Line:

I liked this book, I just wish all of the twists weren’t so obvious.

Book Review: Wonder {R.J. Palacio}

It will be hard to find the words to describe just how much I loved this book but I’ll try…

Synopsis from Goodreads:

wonder

I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.

August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. WONDER, now a #1 New York Times bestseller and included on the Texas Bluebonnet Award master list, begins from Auggie’s point of view, but soon switches to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others. These perspectives converge in a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance.

5 Stars (would give it a million stars if I could)

I am writing this review with actual tears in my eyes.  This book is perfection and the various messages that it sends are some of the strongest, most impactful, and most important messages one can learn.  I absolutely loved this book and cannot recommend it enough.

The story is written from the different perspectives of various people and each chapter is short and very quick.  This is one of those books that could so easily be read in one sitting!  I read it over 2 days but if I had the time (and the quiet!), I easily have devoured it all at once.

It’s technically “Young Adult Literature” (YA) but truly can (and should) be read by all ages.  The life lessons taught here are applicable and necessary to everyone.

This beautiful story will have you laughing, crying, and feeling every emotion in between.  If you haven’t read this one yet, you are in for such a wonderful treat!

Bottom Line:

Many people think this book should be required reading for all middle schoolers.  Those people are wrong.  This book should be required reading for all middle schoolers, high schoolers, and adults.

On Wednesday I will have an adorable CHILDREN’S book review and GIVEAWAY of it for you!

Book Review: Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine {Gail Honeyman}

I couldn’t WAIT to read this book!  I had heard such wonderful things from so many different people!  When I finally got my hands on a copy, I was so excited…

eleanor

Synaposis from Goodreads:

No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. And it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

Soon to be a major motion picture produced by Reese Witherspoon, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is the smart, warm, and uplifting story of an out-of-the-ordinary heroine whose deadpan weirdness and unconscious wit make for an irresistible journey as she realizes. . .

The only way to survive is to open your heart.

I read this book months ago and when I came here to review it I realized…it has left zero impression on me.  The worst books are the ones where you close the cover after you finish reading and never think about the characters or story lines again and this book is a perfect example.  I was so excited to read it…there was (is) such a buzz about it!  What I was assuming (and hoping) would have been a fun and heartwarming story ended up being a boring, sad, and depressing one instead.  The biggest thing I remember about this book was just how bored I was while reading it…but there was such a buzz about it that I felt compelled to keep reading. Such a disappointment for me because I was SO excited to read it! I’m curious to hear what others thought because this is currently such a popular book…Have you read it?  Did you like it?

Bottom Line:

There were absolutely a few scenes where I remember smiling while reading…but mostly I just remember yawning.

An Unwanted Guest {Shari Lapena}

FullSizeRender (3)

Read my thoughts below to see why I took this a photo of this book with my robe, lol:)

About a week and a half ago in my review of A Stranger in the House {Shari Lapena} I mentioned that I was looking forward to reading Shari Lapena’s newest novel.  After I wrote that review, I did read this one…and it was GREAT!

Synopsis from Goodreads:

A weekend retreat at a cozy mountain lodge is supposed to be the perfect getaway… but when the storm hits, no one is getting away.

It’s winter in the Catskills and Mitchell’s Inn, nestled deep in the woods, is the perfect setting for a relaxing – maybe even romantic – weekend away. It boasts spacious old rooms with huge woodburning fireplaces, a well-stocked wine cellar, and opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or just curling up with a good murder mystery.

So when the weather takes a turn for the worse, and a blizzard cuts off all electricity – and all contact with the outside world – the guests settle in and try to make the best of it.

Soon, though, one of the guests turns up dead – it looks like an accident. But when a second guest dies, everyone starts to panic.

Within the snowed-in paradise, something – or someone – is picking off the guests one by one. And there’s nothing they can do but hunker down and hope they can survive the storm – and one another.

As I mentioned in my review of A Stranger in the House {Shari Lapena} I was 50/50 on Shari Lapena’s books.  I LOVED The Couple Next Door: A Novel and I did NOT love
A Stranger in the House: A Novel.  I was excited to read her newest book and I am happy to report that it was great!  Not as great as The Couple Next Door: A Novel, but I definitely would recommend this one.

The chapters were short, the characters were developed, and the use of description was amazing.  I had such a clear vision of the hotel as I was reading based on her amazing use of words.  I also actually felt COLD while reading…the winter storm in the book was so well described that it came straight through the pages.  Amazing.

*I actually had to keep putting my robe on each time I read because I was SO COLD.  Hence the picture above, lol.*

I’m giving this 4 stars only because I felt some of the characters and their reactions to what was happening around them were a bit unrealistic.  Also…how is it possible for SO MANY of these characters to have SUCH dramatic backstories?!

Basically, just don’t read too much into this story…and just enjoy the mystery.  It had me guessing right up until the final twist (which I thought was AWESOME and did NOT see coming)!

Bottom Line:

Shari Lapena’s first and third novels are both great…so what happened with that boring one she wrote in between?!

A Stranger in the House {Shari Lapena}

stranger

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Karen and Tom Krupp are happy—they’ve got a lovely home in upstate New York, they’re practically newlyweds, and they have no kids to interrupt their comfortable life together. But one day, Tom returns home to find Karen has vanished—her car’s gone and it seems she left in a rush. She even left her purse—complete with phone and ID—behind.

There’s a knock on the door—the police are there to take Tom to the hospital where his wife has been admitted. She had a car accident, and lost control as she sped through the worst part of town.

The accident has left Karen with a concussion and a few scrapes. Still, she’s mostly okay—except that she can’t remember what she was doing or where she was when she crashed. The cops think her memory loss is highly convenient, and they suspect she was up to no good.

Karen returns home with Tom, determined to heal and move on with her life. Then she realizes something’s been moved. Something’s not quite right. Someone’s been in her house. And the police won’t stop asking questions.

Because in this house, everyone’s a stranger. Everyone has something they’d rather keep hidden. Something they might even kill to keep quiet.

Let me begin by saying that I LOVED Shari Lapena’s debut novel, The Couple Next Door.  I couldn’t put it down (review coming soon)!  As soon as I finished reading that amazing book, I was on pins and needles waiting for this one to be released.  The bar was set HIGH when I began reading this one…and it was painfully obvious from the beginning that the poor bar was about to be dramatically lowered.

This book was boring.  Even the scenes which were supposed to be exciting somehow still came across as boring.  None of the characters were particularly memorable and this entire story just kind of fell flat.  The description for the book is great, this book sounds exciting!  And then once I started reading…I was just so bored.  Took a few days to finish, yet it felt like I had been reading for years.

The ending was interesting and had me second guessing my feelings that I had been feeling throughout the whole book…maybe it wasn’t as boring as I thought?  But then I remembered…yes, yes it was (side note on a life lesson: don’t ever second guess yourself).

I’m very much looking forward to reading Shari Lapena’s newest book, An Unwanted Guest, only because The Couple Next Door was so amazing.  Fingers crossed her newest book proves to be more exciting than this one…

Bottom Line:

I read this book while laying on a gorgeous beach in Mexico with mouth watering guacamole next to me and yet I was STILL bored while reading.

Thought-provoking, heart-rending but ultimately uplifting, Julie Cohen’s Dear Thing is a book you won’t be able to put down, until you pass it on to your best friends.

What a thought-provoking book this was.  I loved it and loved the different angles the author took in describing each situation.  Each character’s individual story really tugged at my heartstrings and together they combined to create one interestingly intricate web. I love books where you can’t imagine how each story will be wrapped up in the end and this was a perfect example of that.  As I was reading, I couldn’t imagine how this book was going to end…and it made me want to keep reading to find out!  A beautifully told story about sensitive topics with so many complicated layers. I highly recommend this one!

Bottom Line:

A wonderfully written and thought-provoking story.

The Hate U Give {Angie Thomas}

hate

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does—or does not—say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

I’m honestly not sure that I’ve ever read a more powerful book in my life.  Ever.  This is truly one of the most well written pieces of literature that I’ve ever read.  The writing is real, raw, tragic, heartbreaking, beautiful, and so wonderfully descriptive.  Everyone should read this book–all races, all genders.

There are no faults with this book.  It’s perfect.  In every way.  Highly, highly recommend this one.

I don’t think I even breathed while reading the last 100 or so pages…could NOT put it down.  The writing!  The details!  So intense!

There are no words to express my absolute love for this beautifully written story.  Each character (and setting) was so well written.  It’s a YA book (young adult) and told from the perspective of 16 year old Starr.  This added to the magic of the book…having it told from the voice of someone so young, yet so wise and so aware of the world.

This was Angie Thomas’s debut novel and I can’t wait to see what she will write next.  I’m reaaaaally hoping it’s a sequel!  The movie The Hate U Give comes out this week…and the trailer looks AMAZING!

Please read the book first, though.  Always read the book first.

Bottom Line:

One of the most powerful books I have ever read.

Oh how I loved this book!  It was easy, quick, and delightful. The writing wasn’t spectacular but overall it was a quick and extremely enjoyable little read.

One of my favorite things about reading is the ability that a good book has to instantly transform me straight into different places and cultures.  I learned so much just from reading this novel and found myself googling images of Kabul and it’s culture on numerous occasions while reading.

I highly recommend this book!  The characters were compelling, the story was captivating, and the knowledge I gained was very interesting.  There are so many different story lines and I enjoyed reading each of them.  Deborah Rodriguez did a fantastic job of intertwining all of the different stories from all of the characters into one charming plot.

This book was quite different from Deborah Rodriguez’s memoir (The Kabul Beauty School) which I actually didn’t love…

As I was writing this review, I learned that Deborah Rodriguez has written a sequel, Return to the Little Coffee Shop of Kabul!  I’m so excited!  I can’t wait to reunite with these lovely characters and to witness their stories unfold even more.

Bottom Line:

Great story, great characters, and I learned a great deal about a different and interesting culture.
