3 Books I’m NOT Reading

I bought this little guy from a grocery store in Tennessee a little over a year ago. He makes me happy!

As you are very well aware by now, I hardly actually buy books. I am a minimalist at heart! While the thought of a gorgeous bookshelf filled with books does appeal to me, the clutter of those books that I probably will read one time and never again does not. However, I DO end up buying (or somehow acquiring) books sometimes and often I find them mounting and mounting without actually being read. I’m starting a new series called “Books I’m Not Reading” and this is the first installment! From time to time, I will select books from my shelf and show you the books I’m NOT reading, as opposed to my usual routine of showing you the books that I am 😉

These are 3 of books on my shelf that currently haunt me. They stare at me day after day and ESPECIALLY when I bring home new books. Ugh.

Here are just a few of the books from my shelf that I’m NOT reading.

Book I’m NOT Reading #1:

The Last Mrs. Parrish {Liv Constantine}

I’m honestly not sure why I’m not reading this one. Everyone loves it! I’ve heard it’s great! So…why aren’t I reading it??? Eh.

Lost and Found {Carolyn Parkhurst}

Ok I’ll be honest. I started reading this one about a year ago and after the first chapter, I just wasn’t hooked. However, I felt like I didn’t want to give up entirely so I put it right back from where I took it…my own shelf! I keep saying I’ll try again but then I never do. Have any of you read it? Should I?

Arranged Marriage {Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni}

I bought this book at the Printer’s Row Lit Fest before the world shut down waaaaaay back in 2019 (you can read all about that magical day HERE). I had SO MUCH FUN that day and promised myself to make it an annual tradition. Well, enter Covid….aaaaaaaaand I haven’t been back since. It was canceled in 2020 and although it did happen in 2021, I wasn’t quite ready for a crowded festival. FINGERS CROSSED I CAN GET BACK THERE IN 2022!!! 2 Books, 2 Hijacked Planes, 1 Decision

Only I would get stuck slowly driving behind a bookmobile right next to a sign pointing out a different library…

A few weeks ago, I put this book on hold at the library.

Goodreads Synopsis of Hostage {Claire Mackintosh}:

I received the notification that the book was in and I could pick it up at any time. I was so excited! I thought it looked so good.

Aaaaaand a few hours later ON THE SAME DAY THAT THE BOOK CAME IN, I received a text from my book twin.

If you have been reading my blog for any length of time, you are well aware of my Book Twin, Jana. Jana and I (almost) always agree on books and we take each other’s recommendations very seriously. If she loves a book, there is a HIGH chance that I will as well. If I love a book, I can’t wait for Jana to read it. We text each other often with book recommendations, especially if one of us reads a book that we KNOW the other will love.

Jana’s text:

This text from Jana really threw me. She recommended Falling. And not just recommended it but used the phrase “READ THIS ONE.” I immediately googled the synopsis and realized that there is no way I could possibly read BOTH of these books back to back. 1 book about a hijacked plane is definitely more than enough for an already generally anxious person who loves to fly.

So I suddenly found myself in a bit of a conundrum. Which to read??? The one already waiting for me at the library or the one I’d have to order and possibly wait a long time to read???

If you are lucky to have someone in your life who recommends books to you and is always (or almost always) SPOT ON…you listen to them.

Many of you tell me that I’m that person for you…I’m flattered! I write this blog with the intention of helping as many people as possible find books they will love. Some of my reviews you may agree with, some you may not…but in the end, I love knowing that I’ve introduced so many of you to books you may not otherwise have picked up.

So, back to my conundrum. Random book I found on social media or Book Twin recommendation?

I canceled my hold request for Hostage (which pained me a bit…who cancels a request for a book when the book is WAITING for you to pick it up???) and I immediately put in a request for Falling.

A few weeks later…

I’m so excited to read it! I may wait a few weeks as I’m going on a vacation (NOT flying, lol) and I think this may be the perfect vacay read.

And let’s take a moment to talk about my book twin and the fact that she did indeed read BOTH OF THESE BOOKS BACK TO BACK. That’s A LOT of hijacking! I don’t think I would ever fly again! Here are her thoughts:

Book Review: Playing Nice {JP Delaney}

So this is a perfect example of why sometimes you just need to browse the library shelves in person. I had never heard of JP Delaney’s Playing Nice, knew absolutely nothing about it, randomly saw it on a shelf at the library, read the back cover….and immediately knew I had to read and review this book. The synopsis GRABBED me!

My Review of Playing Nice {JP Delaney}:

This book is GREAT. Omg it’s AWESOME.

Short chapters are my favorite and this book is wonderfully filled with 112 of them. Some a few pages in length, many less than 1 page. THE BEST! I wish every book could be written like this. I truly couldn’t put it down!

This story is INTENSE…it’s completely unfathomable to me how something like this could actually happen. It’s such a thought provoking scenario and truly a parent’s absolute worst nightmare. Omg.

Pro Tip: Make sure you have a nice quiet spot where you can devour the last 50ish pages because there is no way you will be able to stop reading at at point. SO. GOOD.

And yet again… I had about a million predictions and absolutely zero of them turned out to be correct. LOVE WHEN THAT HAPPENS!

Bottom Line:

Read this book. It’s fantastic.

I Bought a Book!

Throughout this quarantine, I have been reading my way though a huge stack of library books that I had checked out before the Illinois shelter in place began, books on my bookshelf that I hadn’t yet read, and books borrowed from my dear friends. If you have been following me for any length of time, you know that I am completely obsessed with my local library. I absolutely love checking out library books and VERY rarely purchase books on my own. However, with our local library currently being closed and with no plans of reopening any time soon (insert sobbing emoji here)…I finally bought myself a brand new, beautiful book!

On Monday, I posted the following on Facebook:

That post received SO MANY great responses and some AMAZING book suggestions! I just love the Book Coffee Happy reader community so very much. 🙂 Some of your suggestions were books that I’ve read (and LOVED) and others were new to me titles. I read every single one of your comments and looked up the synopsis of every single book mentioned. I’m VERY happy to report that my To Read list has grown thanks to that post! Some of the books mentioned by you guys sound AMAZING. I love, love, love book discussions. Thank you so much to those of you who commented! I gave my decision as to which book I was going to buy lots of thought. Being the president of my daughter’s school’s PTO has been hard work…and receiving this gift card as a thank you touched my heart. I needed to spend it wisely! Although a few of those Facebook post suggestions reaaaaaaally got me thinking…I ultimately decided on a book that wasn’t even mentioned by any of you in that post.

I Bought A Book!

The book that I bought is a book I have been dying to read for MONTHS AND MONTHS…even before it’s release. I’ve been on my library’s wait list forever (before the book was even released) and my name isn’t even coming close to the top (especially now, lol). Every time I would walk into the library, I would desperately check the new release shelf in hopes of it randomly being there but it never was. The good news is that if you are on the wait list at my local library…your name just got moved up 1 spot 🙂

I initially thought of buying this book but then decided to see if any of your suggestions would sway me into thinking that maybe I should spend my gift card on a different title instead.

So after much thought (the minimalist in me does NOT take purchases like this lightly), I ultimately went on Amazon and thanks to Prime…it arrived on my doorstep this afternoon.

Here are some clues about this book:

It was published in February 2020…a brand new release!
It’s listed genres include: mystery, thriller, horror, fiction, and suspense.
This is the 7th book written by this author but the first one I’ve ever read.
The reviews on this book are INSANE….like….everyone loves it. I searched and searched and couldn’t find a negative review! People are LOVING this book which clearly explains why I couldn’t get my hands on a library copy.

Any guesses???

As a fun follow up to yesterday’s post where I was burning a Christmas scented candle, here is the candle currently burning next to me as I type. Quarantine life has taught me not to wait for the correct time to burn the seasonal candles….there are no seasons in quarantine! Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!

Off to rip open this Amazon box and wipe down my brand new book with these disinfecting wipes so I can start reading ASAP!

Why these 2 Books Are So Meaningful To Me: The Time Travelers Wife {Audrey Niffenegger} and The Sari Shop Widow {Shobhan Bantwal}

I’ve mentioned before that I take choosing books for vacations very seriously. When packing for my honeymoon 10 years ago (!!!) I took choosing these books VERY seriously! Jon and I just celebrated our 10 year anniversary last week and in honor of this milestone anniversary, I thought I would share bits of our honeymoon with you today.

10 years ago, we left for our honeymoon approximately 28 hours after our wedding ended and I was more than READY for a relaxing, perfect week in Jamaica with my HUSBAND!

Checking into the hotel was the very first time I ever officially wrote my brand new name!

We had the best week with the best memories. The most perfect start to our new life!

For as long as I live, I will never ever forget laying in the shallow end of this beautiful ocean while reading a book. To this day, I’ve never in my entire life felt as peaceful as I did in that moment. The waves all around me, the sky as perfectly blue as could be. I would give anything to return to that beach and read just like that again one day. Hands down one of my most favorite reading moments of my life!

So peaceful, right???

We had our own private villa with our own private pool. See those lounge chairs? I remember laying there and reading next to my new tote bag with my brand new initials while Jon was laying in the chair next to me. Every few pages I would glance over at that tote in pure disbelief that those initials were now MINE!

Omg this book. I SOBBED in the very best way possible! Truly one of the best and most thought provoking books I’ve read. If you haven’t read this gem, I VERY highly recommend it. Beautifully written characters, beautifully written story. I’m getting teary just thinking about it. Such a gorgeous book. READ THIS BOOK!

My Thoughts:

I’ll be honest…this book didn’t leave nearly the impression on me as The Time Traveler’s Wife did. I very much remember LIKING it…but I do not very much remember LOVING it. Wasn’t horrible, wasn’t amazing. This book was just a bit forgettable although clearly the EXPERIENCE of reading it for me was most definitely not!

I loved both of these books but the most special part of them isn’t the writing. It is the fact that they are both completely water logged from the gorgeous Jamaican water! Just looking at the ripples in these pages will forever make me smile and remember one of the best times of my entire life. I will never, ever get rid of these books!

Aaaaand come to think of it…this would be yet another example of how I don’t take care of books, lol 🙂

My #1 Favorite Movie of ALL TIME…But I’ve Never Read the Book!

The year was 2001. My best friend Amy and I went to the movie theater and saw it. WE. LOVED. IT. So much so that we went back just to see it again! We HAD TO. And again. And again. Aaaaaaand when this movie finally completed it’s theatrical run, Amy and I had gone to see it together….drumroll please…

10 TIMES.

Yes, we saw this movie 10 TIMES in the movie theater. We couldn’t get enough! HOW was that 19 years ago??? Such a fun memory!!!

Serendipity Trailer:

Everything about this beautiful movie was (is) pure magic for us.

The CD I had playing on repeat in my car for YEARS. I still know every single word to every single song and have been humming them while writing this post. 🙂

If you haven’t seen the movie Serendipity…WATCH THE MOVIE SERENDIPITY. No better time than during a quarantine…

Throughout the movie, there is a classic book referenced over and over again which plays a very large part of the storyline. Of course I had to buy the book!

I’ve owned this book for 19 years…but….have never actually read it! It’s such a huge part of my favorite movie, I’m sure I would love it and it might even make me dig deeper into the meaning of some aspects of the film. Have any of you read it? I’m not sure why I haven’t yet…

I. HAVE. GOOSEBUMPS. This book sounds amazing…I must actually read it!

An Older Book that I LOVED #3

I posted about one of my all time favorite books a few days ago and it got me thinking of other older books that I LOVE but for whatever reason have never been written about on my blog. Being home and quarantined is giving me a perfect opportunity to share these special books with all you 🙂

During a time when so many of you are looking for wonderful books to read, this feels like a wonderful time to give these suggestions and a chance for me to revisit some of my very favorite titles. Writing about these books is definitely making me want to reread them!

(I wrote this post last year but it is another example of an older book that I LOVED so I’m including it in this new blog series as well)!

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Oh how I loved this book!

It was so beautifully written. Everything about this book was absolutely stunning…the storylines, the characters, the writing style….everything. Couldn’t put it down.

I remember sitting in our library’s silent reading room 6 years ago with this book open in front of me as I DEVOURED each beautiful page. There was a cackling fire in the fireplace, blueberry oatmeal in the tupperware container next to me, steaming hot coffee in the orange travel mug in my hand, and I remember thinking that the entire scene was the most perfect definition of the word”glorious”.

Although I never wrote about this special book on my blog until today (hoooow???), I apparently did write about it on Instagram back in 2018:

Bottom Line:

One of the most beautifully written books I’ve ever read.

My Top Book Recommendations

Receiving texts asking for book recommendations was what ultimately prompted me to begin writing this blog. I know many of you are currently quarantined at home and reading…I’ve received SO MANY texts over the past 2 weeks asking for book recommendations! I thought it would be helpful to compile a blog post with my top book recommendations (Warning: if you text me and ask for book recommendations from here on out, I will most likely just be responding to you with a link to this post). 🙂

This list in not all inclusive! There are so many other books out there that I recommend in addition to these amazing titles but this is a great compilation with many of my absolute favorite books.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was the CLEAR winner with a huge amount of votes, everyone seems to really love this book!

The First Book I’ve Bought in YEARS!

The older I become, the more I believe in and practice minimalism. You can read more about this decision in this post! I am constantly tidying, decluttering, and getting rid of things around our house. My annual garage sale has become one of my favorite events! Whenever anyone asks for gift ideas for anyone in our family (especially for our children) I always respond with EXPERIENCES OVER PHYSICAL THINGS. My children will gain so much more from an enriching experience than any toy could ever provide. I proudly keep my house clean, organized, and as clutter free as possible (If you are interested, I can do an entire post on this…just let me know in the comments). One area that I’ve come to realize gets out of hand quickly when I allow it to is BOOKS. As you know, I’m a huge book lover (obvi) and reading books truly brings me happiness (hence the name of my blog). It took me many years to realize that my joy of READING does not in fact mean that I find joy in OWNING books. Libraries have become my happy place as they allow me the opportunity to read any book I want without having the physical book in my possession when I’m done.

As a book blogger, I’m extraordinarily blessed that authors are constantly mailing me copies of their books on a regular basis for me to read and review on my blog. These books are in a whole separate category of things that I own. They are so much more than just books to me…these are actual reminders of my hard work and dedication to this blog as well as the actual reminders of authors and publishers who believe in my value as well as my opinion. Minimalism dictates not keeping anything which doesn’t hold a special meaning to the owner…these special books are some of my prized possessions!

It’s the books that I seek out on my OWN to read…the books where buying them will eventually mean one more thing on my bookshelf to keep tidy…it’s THOSE books where I love reading (and returning) a library copy.

I have been wanting to read this particular book for MONTHS.

I went to the library yesterday…no copies in stock. I checked out 2 books that I wasn’t even that excited to read for the simple fact that they weren’t this particular book.

When I got back to my car, I called our other local library (the one where I had placed a hold on this particular book) from the parking lot of the first library.

I’ve been on this library’s wait list FOR. EV. ER. The library recently started a new system where they won’t tell you what number you are in line! They are now part of a consortium that receives books from all other surrounding libraries so there really is no way to track when your book will be in. It’s both wonderful and FRUSTRATING. It’s wonderful because you theoretically could receive your book much quicker as it could be coming from a multitude of libraries and not just from one. I called our library yesterday to see if they could give me ANY indication…am I #2 or #200??? They wouldn’t tell me. I hung up and drove my annoyed self straight to Barnes and Noble. I couldn’t wait even another day to start reading this book.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I’ve been holding on to this beautiful gift card from one of my best friends for months waiting until there was a book I’ve reaaaaally been wanting to read. The time has come!

How cute are these tote bags??? Barnes and Noble for the WIN!

I’ve seen this before and I think it’s a fun idea. You get a book without knowing which book you are receiving! There are descriptions written on the covers and you make your decision based upon those descriptions without ever seeing the actual cover. Love it!

HOWEVER…

I love it for a library where you aren’t paying actual money to blindly make a purchase. $16.00 to buy a book I very well might not want to own? That’s the exact OPPOSITE of minimalism (and smart purchasing in general). Hell no!

Besides, I was there on a MISSION. No time for cute tote bags or mystery purchases. I hobbled (stupid broken toe) straight to the fiction section, found my book waiting for me on the shelf, quickly scooped it up, paid with my beautiful gift card, and happily drove home.

I started reading this afternoon! It’s making my broken toe feel better already…

Polygamy is absolutely fascinating to me…I could NEVER share my husband/life with another woman. EVER. Sister Wives on TLC is one of my very favorite shows. Do you watch Sister Wives? Which wife is your favorite? #teamchristine

I’m currently on chapter 2 of my new book and from what I’ve read so far…this was a smart purchase. A very smart purchase indeed.

Sometimes, minimalist or not…a girl just wants to read what a girl wants to read. NOW. And this girl is doing just that 🙂
