Blogmas 2022: The 13 Best Books I Read in 2022

Blogmas 2022: The 13 Best Books I Read in 2022

For the past 2 years on this post I have used a picture of the year’s number all lit up in beautiful lights from an annual drive thru light show. This year they had the lights set up in a weird place and I couldn’t get my annual blog picture! Soooo….random selfie it is, lol.

It’s heeeeeere….the post I wait all year to write! This post is always so much fun for me because it allows me the opportunity to think about and reflect on alllllll of the books I’ve read this year (and I’ve read A LOT of books this year). It’s also always one of my most visited posts due to the fact that I include it in my blog signature at the very bottom of each post that I write.

If you are a regular blog reader, you know that I always include my “bottom line” on the bottom of my reviews which is a quick way for me to recap my feelings. Just like I have done in past years, I thought it would be fun to list these books only by the bottom line that I gave to them in my reviews. Click these bottom lines to take you directly to my review of each book (which also includes the synopsis for each book).

Here are links to my favorite books from past years:

Blogmas 2022: Book Review: The Twelve Topsy-Turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas {James Patterson, Tad Safran}

Obsessed with how this picture turned out…

Goodreads Synopsis of The Twelve Topsy-Turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas {James Patterson, Tad Safran}:

Every year at Christmastime, Will and Ella Sullivan, and their father, Henry, come to a family agreement: Christmas is a holiday for other people.

At their brownstone in Harlem, stockings go unstuffed, tinsel unstrewn, gifts unbought, mistletoe unhung, chestnuts unroasted, carols unplayed, cookies uncooked, a tree un-visible, and guests uninvited.

Until guests start arriving anyway. In pairs and sixes, in sevens and tens—they keep coming. And they stay. For twelve long, hard, topsy-turvy, very messy days. That’s when the Sullivans discover that those moments in life that defy hope, expectation, or even imagination, might be the best gifts of all.

My Review of The Twelve Topsy-Turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas {James Patterson, Tad Safran}:

This book is…cute.

I definitely found myself smiling throughout reading. The descriptions in my head of what was happening in each scene were hilarious and delightful. It’s nearly impossible to write this review without giving away so many spoilers so I will just leave it at this: Not what I was expecting (not even close, lol) but a cute little holiday read. Would make a precious movie.

I LOVED the ending.

Such a short book, such an easy read. Chapters were just a few pages each…the best! I WILL say that I was expecting so much MORE from James Patterson which leads me to believe that he had very, very little with the actual writing of this book, lol.

Bottom Line:

Would I recommend it? Eh…it’s cute…but there are WAY better holiday books out there.

Blogmas 2022: Book Review: Christmas in Winter Hill {Melody Carlson}

Blogmas 2022: Book Review: Christmas in Winter Hill {Melody Carlson}

Oh I have such a little GEM of a holiday book for you today!

This book was one of the 8 holiday books that I was excited to read during last holiday season (you can read that post HERE)…and boy did I discover such a lovely little holiday book when I read this one.

Goodreads Synopsis of Christmas in Winter Hill {Melody Carlson}:

Krista Galloway is not a fan of Christmas. After her rough childhood in multiple foster homes, the holiday season just brings too many bad memories to the surface. But when she accepts a job as a city manager in the mountain town of Winter Hill, Washington, Christmas is part of the deal. The small town is famous for its Christmasville celebration, something that the city manager . . . well, manages.

As she tries to make her tiny new apartment feel like home for her and her eight-year-old daughter, Emily, Krista begins to wonder if this move was a mistake. She doesn’t always feel welcomed in the close-knit town, and Emily continually wonders, “Where’s the snow?” Can a friendly stranger and his family help restore Krista’s Christmas spirit before the big day?

Bestselling author Melody Carlson invites you to spend this holiday season in a town you’ll never forget–and never want to leave.

Beautiful cover art

My Review of Christmas in Winter Hill {Melody Carlson}:

This book was exactly what I was hoping it would be…light, easy, and heartwarming. in other words, exactly the type of book I like to read during this time of year!

I read this book during LAST year’s holiday season over 2 days which is NOT something that I do often anymore (#kids). I loved how short this book was, it made me read even quicker knowing I would be able to finish it ASAP.

I’ve already looked up Melody Carlson’s other books and have a bunch on TBR. I love her easy to read writing style!

Looking for a super quick, heartwarming, holiday read? Here you go, it’s such a lovely book 🙂

Bottom Line:

Perfect little holiday read!

Have you read this book? What did you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Blogmas 2022: The Christmas Book I Started Reading and Didn’t Finish

Cutie 🙂

I took this book from a Little Free Library 3 YEARS ago! HERE is the post (omg how amazing does that salad in that post look?? And also…who knew that my local library was actually bracing for CORONAVIRUS at that time and I posted on my blog telling people to stay home, lol?! So weird…)

**When I took this book, it was called A Gift From Tiffany’s. Apparently the name of it’s movie (and now the book) have changed to Something from Tiffany’s. The original title is no longer available…I apparently have myself a RELIC, lol. It’s a shame because the old cover is SO MUCH better than the newer, updated version.**

Goodreads Synopsis of Something From Tiffany’s {Melissa Hill}:

When Ethan Greene lost his wife to cancer, he never thought he would be able to replace her… until one woman stepped in and showed him how to be happy again. Now, on a romantic Christmas trip to New York City, he has a plan to show Vanessa just how important she is to him, and maybe even give his daughter, Daisy, a complete family again. He’s going to propose with a perfect ring from Tiffany’s.

Gary Knowles and his girlfriend Rachel are on the trip-of-a-lifetime in New York, at the most magical time of year. The only thing missing is Gary’s gift for Rachel. On a last-minute Christmas Eve visit to Tiffany’s, he quickly picks out a charm bracelet for her, and heads back to their hotel. But, in a moment, one small mistake changes everything.

The Christmas Book I Started Reading and Didn’t Finish:

So I think the problem here was that I started reading this 400 page book on December 28th. I THOUGHT I was still feeling Christmas spirit but turns out…Christmas was over.

I will say that I did NOT give this book a fair chance. At all. And then on December 30th, I stopped reading at page 60. I just wasn’t feeling it!

The story was interesting, just not interesting enough to make me want to keep reading…

This book has been turned into a movie! It’s title is Something From Tiffany’s and you can watch it on Amazon Prime (it just released 12/9 and I think it looks ADORABLE)!  Here is the movie trailer:

If you watch the movie (or read the book), I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Book I’m Currently Reading:

Goodreads Synopsis of The Twelve Topsy, Turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas {James Patterson}:

Every year at Christmastime, Will and Ella Sullivan, and their father, Henry, come to a family agreement: Christmas is a holiday for other people.

At their brownstone in Harlem, stockings go unstuffed, tinsel unstrewn, gifts unbought, mistletoe unhung, chestnuts unroasted, carols unplayed, cookies uncooked, a tree un-visible, and guests uninvited.

If you follow me on Instagram (which you should because I post on there so much more often than I post anywhere else), you already saw my birthday present from my daughter. LOVE! It’s amazing and makes my heart happy every single time I use it.

I just love being a mom so much 🙂

Currently Making Me Happy:

I’ll be returning to the wonderful town of Addison, Connecticut SOON!

Do you remember the adorable book series that I discovered during last holiday season (you can read alllllll about it HERE)??? I read the first half of the series during last holiday season and saved the other half to read during this holiday season. A smart choice, indeed…I’ve been looking forward to reading these all year!

I read the top 3 during last holiday season and have saved the bottom 3 to read during this holiday season 🙂

After I finish reading The Twelve Topsy-Turvy, Very Messy Days of Christmas, I’m heading straight back to Addison 🙂 I can’t wait to return!

Next up for me…First Flurries!

What are you currently reading?

What coffee are you currently enjoying?

Blogmas 2022: Book Review: Kiss Her Once For Me {Alison Cochrun}

Oh was I excited for this book to be released! I absolutely LOVED, LOVED, LOVED Alison Cochrun’s previous book, The Charm Offensive and I couldn’t WAIT to get my hands on a copy of her newest book, Kiss Her Once for Me!

***And if you haven’t yet read The Charm Offensive….READ. THE. CHARM. OFFENSIVE. I absolutely DEVOURED that book, it’s so amazing.***

Goodreads Synopsis of Kiss Her Once For Me {Alison Cochrun}:

One year ago, recent Portland transplant Ellie Oliver had her dream job in animation and a Christmas Eve meet-cute with a woman at a bookstore that led her to fall in love over the course of a single night. But after a betrayal the next morning and the loss of her job soon after, she finds herself adrift, alone, and desperate for money.

Finding work at a local coffee shop, she’s just getting through the days—until Andrew, the shop’s landlord, proposes a shocking, drunken plan: a marriage of convenience that will give him his recent inheritance and alleviate Ellie’s financial woes and isolation. They make a plan to spend the holidays together at his family cabin to keep up the ruse. But when Andrew introduces his new fiancée to his sister, Ellie is shocked to discover it’s Jack—the mysterious woman she fell for over the course of one magical Christmas Eve the year before. Now, Ellie must choose between the safety of a fake relationship and the risk of something real.

My Review of Kiss Her Once For Me {Alison Cochrun}:

Aaaaaaand exactly as expected…I loved it 🙂

It’s wonderful! I LOVED the characters…each so intricate, so complicated, and so beautifully written. I loved the humor and found myself smiling while reading at many different points. I loved the overall messages and takeaways from this book (which I won’t say because I would never spoil a book for you)!

**Side Note: I think the name Ellie Oliver might be the cutest character name I’ve read.**

Reading is self care!

Alison Cochrun has such a gift and whatever she writes, I will absolutely read. Her writing just flows so well…does that even make sense?! I adore her!

Kiss Her Once for Me is such a delightful holiday book and as someone who LOVES the snow, all of the beautiful snowy scenes made my heart so happy 🙂

Bottom Line:

Loved it.

Book Review: Bookish People {Susan Coll}

Book Review: Bookish People {Susan Coll}

I’m such a sucker for books about people who read books. If you recall what FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME is, than this statement should come to you as no surprise.

Knowing this, you can understand why the synopsis of Bookish People grabbed me….especially the last sentence!

Goodreads Synopsis of Bookish People {Susan Coll}:

Independent bookstore owner Sophie Bernstein is burned out on books. Mourning the death of her husband, the loss of her favorite manager, her only child’s lack of aspiration, and the grim state of the world, she fantasizes about going into hiding in the secret back room of her store.

Meanwhile, renowned poet Raymond Chaucer has published a new collection, and rumors that he’s to blame for his wife’s suicide have led to national cancellations of his publicity tour. He intends to set the record straight—with an ultra-fine-point Sharpie—but only one shop still plans to host him: Sophie’s.

Fearful of potential repercussions from angry customers, Sophie asks Clemi—bookstore events coordinator, aspiring novelist, and daughter of a famed literary agent—to cancel Raymond’s appearance. But Clemi suspects Raymond might be her biological father, and she can’t say no to the chance of finding out for sure.

This big-hearted screwball comedy features an intergenerational cast of oblivious authors and over-qualified booksellers—as well as a Russian tortoise named Kurt Vonnegut Jr.—and captures the endearing quirks of some of the best kinds of people: the ones who love good books.

My Review of Bookish People {Susan Coll}:

Ok so my feelings on this one are a bit all over the place. I definitely liked it and dare I even say there were parts that I LOVED but…there were MOST definitely parts that were pretty boring. It was just so wordy. SO. MANY. WORDS. And so much backstory, so many feelings…I just kept waiting for something (anything) to happen.

I didn’t feel like the character development was complete, the various viewpoints from which the story was told were confusing, and it all just felt a bit jumbled together.

HOWEVER…and here is where I’m so conflicted in my thoughts on this one…there were parts of this book that were absolutely ADORABLE. I found myself smiling on more than one occasion while reading! The backbone of this story is that books is what binds all of these people together and I absolutely loved that aspect of the book. A book describing the inner workings of a bookstore and it’s staff? Yes please!

Waiting for my Covid Booster!

But….just as often as I found myself smiling, I also found myself contemplating not even finishing because I just really didn’t care what happened to any of the characters (except for Sophie and Kurt Vonnegut Jr.).

I will say that I enjoyed this book SIGNIFICANTLY more as I kept reading and by the end, I actually ended up loving it. I just wish I had those feelings the whole time!

Bottom Line:

I pretty much equally loved and disliked this book.

Have you read this book? What did you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!

Favorite Reading Accessory #5: Electric Fireplace

So we have a real fireplace and I hate it. Give me an electric fireplace any day over the real deal! No smelly ash, nothing to clean, no logs to worry about. A simple switch to “ON” and that’s all? YES PLEASE!

My first experience with an electric fireplace was when we stayed at an Airbnb in Michigan last fall (different trip but you can read about where we stay HERE…we have rented the same Airbnb 4 times now)! From the second I turned that electric fireplace on…I. WAS. HOOKED. Omg it was positively DREAMY! Beautiful “flames” and warmth? PERFECTION.

Michigan October 2020 ❤️

As soon as we got home, I texted the owner of the Airbnb to tell her how obsessed I was with her electric fireplace and how I couldn’t stop thinking about it.

And then on my birthday last year, I opened the BEST GIFT from my husband:

It’s beautiful. I love that it’s bronze, I love that it’s small, I love everything about it.

For those first few days, I LOVED every single thing about this new addition to our home. It was small, it was beautiful, and it was WARM.

And then…it wasn’t warm. Still small, still beautiful, but…not warm. Hmmm.

Did I care? I really didn’t! By this point I was so in love with it that a little thing like heat didn’t really matter to me. That wasn’t the point anyway! I just wanted something pretty to look at while I was reading and this most definitely fit the bill.

Favorite Reading Accessory #6: Fire Crackler!!!

Immediately after I opened my birthday fireplace, my son handed me his wrapped gift. I opened it and was instantly IN LOVE!

A FIRE CRACKLER! It makes all of the sounds of a real fireplace with the push of a button. Omg it’s AWESOME.

I made this video so that you can hear it for yourself:

Fun Fact: I NEVER call it a “crackler”…I ALWAYS call it my “cackler”. I’ve even got my kids only calling it “Mommy’s Cackler”, lol. So there you have it…my perfect reading scenario. Beautiful “flames”, beautiful sounds, NO SMELLY FIREPLACE ASH.

Do you have an electric fireplace? Do you prefer real or electric? GIVE ME ELECTRIC ANYDAY! Add in a “cackler” and it’s reading perfection for me!

A Sad Day.

I saw this beautiful sign a few weeks ago while my family was on vacation in Door County, WI. I love it so, so much.

Good Morning!

I hope you had a nice weekend! I am currently listening to the wind howling, leaves rustling, and rain falling from the window next to me as I’m typing.

A Sad Day

If you have been reading my blog for any length of time, you are WELL aware of my most favorite reading accessory of all time:

My book light.

If you aren’t aware of my obsession with my beloved book light, HERE is the post that explains all about why I love her so much.

Her and I have been together for 7 wonderful years. I’ve used her almost every single day over those 7 years, often times twice each day…morning and night.

She has traveled with me all over the United States. Her and I went to Mexico twice together!

She was with me early in the mornings when nobody else in my house was awake. She was with me late at night when nobody else in my house was awake. Her and I have spent many, MANY hours in the middle of the night breastfeeding my son.

This booklight and I have been through it all. I have read HUNDREDS of books with her and her light has illunimted probably millions of words for me.

If you follow me on Facebook, you have seen her in so many of my signature weekend posts asking all of you what you are currently reading.

If you follow me on Instagram, you have seen her in so many stories saying good night or good morning.

The back of her has been missing for years, the tape holding her together has been replaced over and over. She has gone though SO MANY batteries. Even though she hasn’t been looking her best for a very long time, she has always been beautiful to me.

I always tell my children that the more something shows wear and tear, the more loved it is. With that logic, this little pink booklight has been LOVED.

A Slow Death

I had been noticing for quite some time that she just wasn’t shining as brightly as she once was. I kept changing her batteries but even that wasn’t doing the trick. I tried and tried but there just wasn’t anything I could do to bring back her old brightness.

I knew it was time.

God Speed, Old Buddy.

I so wish I could have bought the exact same booklight. Her cousin maybe? But I already knew that for some crazy reason, she has been discontinued.

Amazon. Searched. Highest Rating. Prime. Clicked Order.

2 days later…a package on my front porch.

I’ll be honest, I didn’t open it for 2 days. I was hoping for a miracle! But alas…it was time.

A New Beginning

I hate that she’s blue. I wish she were pink. There were no color options or clearly I would have chosen pink.

She’s too bright. Like…VERY BRIGHT. 2 weeks ago in the hotel room in Door County she legit lit up the entire room as the rest of my family was sleeping. Sorry family. My husband HATES her.

SO. BRIGHT.

She doesn’t bend. My beloved old booklight used to bend at every angle. This new one is too stiff. She only goes up and down.

Omg as I’m editing this post I now see the random page that I chose for this blog photo. This particular passage is clearly a bit….racy for post about book lights?? I already returned the book to the library so it is what it is. Happy Monday, lol.

HOWEVER…

Dare I say that I like the actual shade of her light…better? My old beloved book light was an LED bulb which I hate. This new friend has a beautiful, soft, warm, glow about her.

My dear old beloved book light isn’t completely dead yet. She’s holding on as long as she can. I gave her to my 9.5 year old daughter who has much better eyesight than I do and therefore the dim light isn’t a problem for her. It brings me joy to watch her last days spent lighting up Babysitters Club books (my FAVORITE book series from when I was a child).

As for me and my new friend, the jury is still out. I’m trying…but I miss my old companion. I’ll keep you posted.

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened” -Dr. Seuss

Take a little time to appreciate your beloved book lights today!

Jenny

Happy 2nd Birthday, Book Coffee Happy!

Today Book Coffee Happy turns TWO! Happy 2nd Birthday to my most favorite hobby!

2 years ago, I decided that it was time for me to stop only READING blogs and it was time for me to start WRITING my own blog.

Writing this blog has proven to be the creative outlet that I didn’t even know I was missing. I love writing it, researching for it, planning my posts, and thinking of the little reading community that I have built here.

I have met so many wonderful people through my little corner of the Internet. I have reconnected with old friends, made many new friends, discovered WONDERFUL books, and have found a way to share my passion of reading with so many people. All because of Book Coffee Happy.

I have allowed myself to share bits of my personal life on here which have proven to be some of my favorite posts I’ve written!

Thank you for reading my blog. Thank you for subscribing to my blog, following me on Facebook, following me on Instagram, following me on Twitter (I’m still not entirely sure how to use Twitter but I try, lol) and following me on YouTube.

Thank you for all of your support and most of all, thank you for all of your love!

You can read about Book Coffee Happy’s 1st birthday where I accidentally dropped a cupcake directly onto my sleeping child last year HERE.

**Note that the 1st birthday post is so much grander than the 2nd birthday post. We are in the middle of a global pandemic, we just returned from a vacation, and I haven’t been to the grocery store to buy what I was hoping would become an annual celebratory cupcake. All I’ve got here is a “2” candle because when I saw these perfect pink candles when my daughter was 1 year old…I BOUGHT ALL OF THE NUMBERS FOR HER CAKES UNTIL SHE TURNS 13. I dare you to find anyone else more Type A than I.**

Happy 2nd Birthday, Book Coffee Happy!
